This is a shorter 6 inch long by 1 1/4 inch .22 suppressor I made mounted on my NFA registered Short Barreled Rifle Ruger 10/22 with a nice Keystone Sporting Arms Revolution Yukon Laminate Thumbhole Stock. This is a really great shooting suppressed .22 with the EOTech 510 holographic sight. Barrel is an 8 inch TacticalInc.com stainless Charger pistol barrel (Ruger Charger barrels fit the 10/22).

Since a suppressed bullet only needs to accelerate to 1000 feet per second a short barrel like this works great. Anything longer is a waste for subsonic shooting. Another benefit of the 8 inch barrel is most standard velocity .22 ammo will be subsonic so I can use cheaper ammo. Standard velocity ammo also functions the action more reliably than subsonic ammo. I install a Volquartsen Target Hammer in all my 10/22s for a huge improvement in trigger pull and break. I also installed a JG Bolt Lock on this rifle to allow single action silence by flipping a lever.

The bolt lock holds the bolt closed and keeps it from cycling to minimize noise. If you have a BATFE Form 1 and tax stamp you can legally build a suppressor using ebay "flashlight" and "filter" suppressors. You typically buy an aluminum threaded tube with two end caps. One end cap is threaded to screw onto the barrel muzzle. The other cap will either have a hole pre-drilled or be solid and ready for you to drill to the bullet path diameter. There are even lightweight titanium flashlight and filter tubes available on ebay.

Pistol caliber carbine rifles are a great fit for homemade non-booster suppressors because they do not use pistol style locked breach operation. Also their heavy, large diameter bullets hit hard at subsonic velocity and their longer barrels allow fast burning pistol powder to completely burn for less muzzle blast. They make excellent home defense weapons for these reasons. I absolutely love my Tavor X95 bullpup in 9mm with a homemade suppressor but a 45ACP carbine would add some stopping power. Since subsonic bullets are limited to a velocity of around 1050 feet-per-second, the best way to add stopping power is to increase the bullet's diameter and weight.

That's why I'm a big fan of suppressed 45ACP because it's hard to beat a 230 grain 45 caliber bullet for short range subsonic stopping power. Buffalo Bore +P 230gr JHP and Hornady +P 220gr JHP Critical Duty are also good choices for subsonic personal defense ammo. +P ammo will usually be louder through a suppressor than standard ammo but the extra stopping power delivered may outweigh the drawback of extra noise. Savage noted the presence of a cocking indicator on the back end of the bolt, the purpose of which is to visually show when the firearm is cocked. Supposedly, when cocked, the tip of the indicator protrudes from the rear of the bolt. When uncocked, the tip of the indicator recesses inside the bolt body.

Our indicator did do this, but it was so subtle we couldn't tell visually if the bolt was cocked or not. We could feel the back of the bolt to learn that the cocking indicator was flat against the bolt housing , or that it was barely indented . Operationally, the Savage was very well mannered. We had no issues installing or removing the Rugged suppressor on the 5⁄8×24 threaded barrel. The thread protector was easy to remove and install.

We liked the big BA-style bolt handle better than the others because it provided a lot of leverage opening and closing the action. We had some misfeeds out of the supplied magazine, which was hard to seat. On a few occasions, a 220-grain round would be picked up out of the magazine but the tip wouldn't elevate enough to enter the chamber cleanly, and the bolt would stop behind the jammed cartridge. We'd have to back the bolt out then use a pair of forceps to pry the round loose, then run the bolt behind the cartridge again while pressing down the others in the magazine. We otherwise had no failures to fire or extract, and brass exited a couple of feet to the right on ejection. We favored the cushy buttpad on the Savage; it was thick and soft and made shooting the 308s pretty comfortable.

I decided to go with an all aluminum monolithic baffle design for a 300 Blackout suppressor as my first suppressor build. "Monolithic baffle" means the baffle is cut from a single piece of round bar. 300 Blackout uses standard .308 size bullets and has fast spin rifling to stabilize heavy subsonic bullets.

Any time you put a can on a rifle, an adjustable gas block will allow you to tune it. I came here for a clue about what barrel to get for a pistol build, but I know once I have it I'm going to want a real stock and a suppressor. If I were building a suppressor for .308 supersonic loads I would use at the very minimum, steel for the blast baffle . A single steel engine freeze plug can make an excellent supersonic rated blast baffle. An all aluminum suppressor should only be used with subsonic ammunition. The fast moving gas from supersonic rounds will quickly wear away aluminum baffles.

All 147gr 9mm and 230gr 45 ACP ammo are subsonic. I can't for the life of me find a thread on this topic again. Muzzle threads is one method of fitting accessories such as flash hiders, suppressors or muzzle brakes . The applicable thread is limited to a certain degree by the bullet caliber and barrel diameter. Right-hand threads are most common, but left-hand threads are sometimes used instead.

Unless otherwise stated, right-hand threads are usually assumed. The Ruger was easier to run because its three-lug bolt required only 70 degrees of throw compared to 90 degrees on the other rifles. The full-diameter bolt body and dual cocking cams offered smooth, easy cycling from the shoulder — better than the others, our shooters said. But we liked the big bolt handle on the Savage better. The five-shot magazine loaded easily, and the cartridges mostly fed smoothly.

It's an all-polymer piece that fits flush with the bottom of the stock, reducing the chance of it hanging on clothing or car parts. We had a couple of rounds pop out of the magazine and wedge in the left side of the receiver. Also, the slab-sided receiver on the Ranch was cut higher on the left side than the other rifles, so it was harder to see into the magwell to check out if a round had gone astray. The stock was a sporter shape, rather than the flattened beavertail fronts on the others, which made it roll around on the bags a little more. The stock had two sling-swivel studs, one in the butt and one in the forend.

The buttpad was a cushy 1-inch-thick model that was very comfortable on the shoulder. The pistol grip had a grooved texture molded into it. Underneath the action was the company's patent-pending Power Bedding feature, an integral bedding block system that holds the receiver. It was also supposed to free-float the barrel, but ours didn't. As noted above, it didn't seem to affect accuracy.

Unsuppressed, the Ruger shot on par with the heavier Remington when fed the 120-grain UMCs and the 147-grain S&Bs, and it way outshot the SPS-T with the 220-grain subsonics. Suppressed, the SPS-T was a little better overall, but the Ruger still shot two rounds under MOA. Installing Weaver bases on the drilled-and-tapped receiver was easy, but Savage has the better idea of providing an installed 1913 rail with the rifle, in our opinion.

Five rounds fed cleanly out of the hinged steel floorplate internal magazine, and we didn't experience any binding issues as we did on the Savage. Unloading the magazine took the push of a button, located inside the front of the trigger guard. The stock doesn't have much drop at the comb or at the heel, and there's not much pitch either. The gun comes up to the face mid-cheek for most shooters. The rifle's soft Supercell recoil pad reduced what little push the 300 BLK makes, which is even less with the silencer on. Many carbines are made to accept common factory mags, or made to compliment a particular line of handguns. To build a flashlight or filter suppressor you may need to make baffles. Dorman steel automotive freeze plugs can be formed into baffles with some work and the cost is low at about 80 cents each.

Call ahead and most auto parts stores can get you a box of 10 overnight. ThePrecisionRifleBlog muzzle brake test found that using the correct caliber muzzle brake isn't that important. Shooting 6mm through a 7.62mm muzzle brake was only 1 to 3% less effective in reducing recoil compared to the same brake in 6mm. This also applies to suppressors so when deciding on the bullet path diameter it's better to err on the side of caution and drill a larger bullet path through the suppressor.

This is why it has become popular to purchase a 45 caliber suppressor and use it on smaller calibers such as 9mm and 40S&W to good effect. To prepare for tapping the barrel thread I drilled the thread end of the baffle. The depth of this hole isn't critical because it will lead into the large blast baffle but it needs to be deep enough to allow the suppressor to screw onto all the thread offered by your rifle barrel.
